Cancún Airport to Tulum: Private Transfer, Train, Bus or Car?

Most trips to Tulum start at Cancún International Airport (CUN). The drive south takes about 1 hour 45 minutes, depending on traffic and where in Tulum you are staying. You have four main ways to do it, and since late 2023 there is also a second option: flying straight into Tulum.
Which option is best from Cancún airport to Tulum?
It depends on your group size and luggage. A private transfer takes you door to door in about 1 hour 45 minutes. The Tren Maya and the bus are the budget routes, but both leave you a taxi ride short of your accommodation. A rental car only pays off if you plan to explore the Yucatán yourself.
| Option | Duration | Comfort | Good for groups | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | About 1 h 45 min | Door to door, one vehicle for everyone, no changes | Yes — built for groups, late arrivals and lots of luggage | TODO |
| Tren Maya | About 1 h 45 min | Shuttle to the station, then a taxi or driver for the last part | Limited — only a few departures a day, light luggage | TODO |
| Bus | TODO | Longer than by car, plus a taxi from the bus station | No — best for solo travellers and couples | TODO |
| Rental car | About 1 h 45 min | Full freedom, but parking is limited in high season | Depends — good if you want to explore the Yucatán on your own | TODO |
1. Is a private transfer worth it for a group?
For most groups, yes. A driver meets you at arrivals and takes everyone straight to the villa or hotel in one vehicle, with no waiting and no changes. On the way you can stop for groceries or drinks. Once the cost is shared, it is often not much more per person.
- Best for: groups, late arrivals, lots of luggage, anyone who wants to start the holiday right away
- Why we like it: no waiting, no changes, one vehicle for everyone. On the way you can stop for groceries or drinks for the villa.
- Good to know: book ahead in high season, especially around New Year. For larger groups we arrange vans.
This is what we book for most of our guests. See airport transfers & drivers.
2. Can we take the Tren Maya from Cancún airport?
Yes. The Tren Maya has a station at Cancún airport, reached by a short shuttle from the terminals, and the ride to Tulum takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. There are only a few departures a day, so it works best if your flight time happens to fit the timetable.
- Best for: travellers on a budget with light luggage whose flight times fit the schedule
- Good to know: check the timetable before you fly. The Tulum stations are outside the centre, so you will still need a taxi or driver for the last part.
3. Is the bus a good way to get to Tulum?
It is the budget route for solo travellers and couples. Long-distance buses run from the airport to Tulum’s bus station several times a day, so you are rarely stuck waiting long. The trip usually takes longer than by car, and you will need a taxi from the bus station to your accommodation.

4. Should we rent a car?
Only if you want to explore the Yucatán on your own. Parking in Tulum’s beach zone and town is limited in high season, and a car parked at the villa is no help on a night out. If you mainly want to reach your villa and then go out, a transfer plus an evening driver is easier.

What about Tulum airport (TQO)?
Tulum International Airport opened in December 2023, south of Tulum, and the drive to town or the beach zone takes about 30 to 50 minutes. It has fewer routes than Cancún, but if there is a direct flight from your city, it can save you over an hour on the road.
We arrange pickups at both airports.
Shall we arrange your airport pickup?
For groups, a private transfer is the simplest option, and often not much more expensive per person than the alternatives once the cost is shared. Send us your flight details and group size, and we arrange the pickup together with the rest of your trip. Planning with us is free.
Book your Cancún airport transfer with us and tell us your arrival time — we take it from there.
