Things to Do in Tulum with a Group: 12 Ideas Beyond the Beach

Tulum is easy to enjoy on your own, but with a group the question changes: what works for eight people with different energy levels, budgets and bedtimes? These are the things our groups enjoy most, from active days to very slow ones.
Days out
1. Swim in a cenote early in the morning. The famous cenotes are calm and beautiful before 10 a.m. and busy after. With a private driver you can do two in one morning. Cenote tours
2. Take a boat out. A private catamaran or yacht with snorkeling stops is the one day almost every group remembers. December to March brings the calmest water. Boats & catamarans
3. See the Tulum ruins at opening time. The site on the cliff is small and gets hot and crowded by late morning. Go early, then head to the beach below.
4. Rent bikes and ride the beach road. Stop for coffee, a swim and lunch on the way. Easy, cheap and good for mixed groups.
5. Take a day trip. Cobá, the lagoon at Bacalar, or a nature day in Sian Ka’an. They are long days, so plan them early in the trip.
Food and drink
6. Have a chef cook at the villa. Breakfast by the pool or a long dinner at home is often the best meal of the trip, and it keeps the whole group together. Private chefs
7. Book one special dinner out. Pick one restaurant for a big night and reserve early. For groups in high season, weeks ahead is normal.
8. Try a mezcal or tequila tasting. At the villa or at a bar, with someone who can explain what you are drinking.
Nights
9. Spend an afternoon at a beach club. Daybeds, lunch, music, and the sunset. Great for groups that want to be together without a fixed plan. Beach clubs
10. Go to a festival or big night. In high season, Zamna, Tehmplo and Day Zero bring international DJs to the jungle. Festival dates
Slow days
11. Book a wellness morning. Massages by the pool, yoga or a sound healing session after a long night. Wellness
12. Do nothing at the villa. Seriously. Leave one day unplanned. With a pool, a fridge full of groceries and a chef for dinner, it is often the day people remember.
How to fit it all in
A good rule for groups: one big thing per day and one per night, with at least one slow day for every three busy ones. Tell us who is coming and what they like, and we build a plan that works for everyone. See our example trips for bachelorettes, bachelors and birthdays.
