Best Time to Visit Tulum: Seasons, Weather & Tips

Planning a trip to Tulum? One of the first questions travelers ask is when to go. Tulum works year-round, but the season you choose changes the weather, the prices and the atmosphere you arrive to. Here is what each one is like.
When is high season in Tulum?
High season runs December to April. The weather is warm and sunny, ideal for beach days and outdoor adventures, and the social scene is at full strength with lively nightlife and world-class DJs at the beach clubs. Villas and hotels book fast, so reserving early is the main thing to get right.
Perfect for: Bachelorette parties, birthday trips, and travelers who want Tulum in full swing.
Is high season worth the higher prices?
For most people, yes. December to March brings calm seas, low humidity and the clearest water of the year: the best conditions for boat days, snorkeling and cenotes. It is also when the social calendar peaks, with New Year’s Eve, Zamna, Tehmplo and Day Zero.
The trade-off: villas, restaurants, tables and drivers book out weeks or months ahead. If you are coming in high season, start planning three to six months before your trip. Our season guide has the dates in detail.
What are the shoulder months like in Tulum?
May to June and October to November are the sweet spot: fewer crowds, better villa availability and lower prices. The weather stays warm, though occasional showers come through. This is the season for travelers who want the luxury side of Tulum without the peak-season rush around it.
Perfect for: Romantic getaways, bachelorette parties, wellness retreats, and private celebrations.
Is it worth visiting Tulum in low season?
July to September is hot, tropical and far less crowded, which means excellent villa deals and more space at the beach clubs. The jungle is at its greenest and cenotes are at their best. Some days bring sargassum seaweed to the beaches, and we point you to the spots with clear water.
Perfect for: Groups seeking luxury at better rates and anyone who prefers a slower pace.
What should you book first?
Villas and tables, in that order, and earlier than feels necessary. The rest of an itinerary can be arranged around them, but they are the two things that genuinely run out. Three practical notes from planning trips here year-round:
- Book early for December and New Year’s Eve. VIP tables and villas sell out months in advance.
- Ask about sargassum before you go. Beaches change day by day, and we can tell you where the water is clearest that week.
- Plan the itinerary with a concierge. Private chefs and yacht days need lead time, and planning with us is free because our partners pay the commission.
